New York City native Victoria McGrath, soprano, is at home in opera, concerts and recitals, and new works. Ms. McGrath’s 2025 season begins at Sarasota Opera, where she will cover Barbarina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, in addition to performing excerpts from Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Verdi’s rarely heard Aroldo. In the spring, McGrath returns to NYC to originate the role of Maria in the world premiere of Daniel Asia’s The Tin Angel with Teatro Grattacielo. Her 2024 season included “The Life of Spring,” a recital of French art songs with L’Opera Comique de Washington, a summer concert series with the Light Opera of New Jersey, her role debut as Adina in L’elisir d’amore with Teatro Grattacielo, and the soprano soloist in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Garden State Opera.
Ms. McGrath’s opera credits include L’elisir d’amore (Adina), La bohème (Musetta), Proving Up (Littler Daughter), Don Giovanni (Zerlina), Suor Angelica (Suor Genovieffa), and Die Zauberflöte (Pamina, Papagena, and 2nd Spirit). She has also performed excerpts from Carmen, Luisa Fernanda, Il viaggio a Reims, La fille du régiment, Le nozze di Figaro, and Die Fledermaus, among others. She is also an avid recitalist who has sung programs of Ukrainian music with Aquilon Music Festival, in addition to concerts with the French Choir of Washington & the Choir of the Embassy of France, Baltimore Musicales, Easton Art Academy, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation.
An advocate for new music, McGrath has covered roles in Paul Davies’ Ourland and John Musto’s Later the Same Evening, in addition to performing excerpts from Justine F. Chen’s The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing. In 2019, she premiered a new setting of Ave Maria by organist and composer Daniel Ficarri; their original recording subsequently aired on Christ Cathedral’s radio program, “Music from the Tower.”
A devoted church musician, Victoria has sung in Catholic and Lutheran churches in New York City and in Washington, DC. Most recently, Ms. McGrath served as a cantor, section leader, and member of the schola cantorum at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in DC. She has been a featured soloist and member of the chamber ensemble at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Manhattan, a regular cantor at Holy Child Jesus Church and St. Benedict Joseph Labre in Queens, and a substitute cantor at multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Brooklyn and Queens, the Archdiocese of New York, and throughout the greater Washington DC area.
Ms. McGrath holds an MM in Opera Performance from the University of Maryland, and a BM in Vocal Performance and BA in History from Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Queens College, where she graduated magna cum laude. She has studied Italian at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia and German at Freie Universität Berlin, NYU’s Deutsches Haus, and Musiktheater Bavaria. She studies with the world-renowned bass baritone Kevin Short.
